Dive Team Lead
The Dive Team Lead will oversee and guide a cohort of high school-aged interns focusing on SCUBA diving and marine science. In this role, the Lead will provide mentorship, training, and supervision both at the museum and in off-site environments throughout the summer. The Dive Team Lead will create an engaging, hands-on learning experience for interns that explores SCUBA diving techniques, marine biodiversity, kelp forest ecosystems, and careers in marine biology, underwater archaeology, diving and environmental conservation. This is a temporary, summer position.
Functions & Responsibilities
Essential Functions
• Supervise, mentor, and train high school interns, ensuring they gain hands-on experience in marine
biology, SCUBA diving, and environmental conservation.
• Organize and lead both virtual and in-person sessions with guest speakers from marine science and
SCUBA diving fields to explore career pathways.
• Provide structured training on the fundamentals of SCUBA diving, ensuring interns gain the necessary
knowledge and skills to safely participate in aquatic activities.
• Facilitate dynamic, interactive activities and workshops to teach interns about marine biology, kelp
forest ecosystems, and conservation efforts.
• Mentor and support interns in developing and presenting an engaging activity station focused on
marine biology and SCUBA diving, allowing them to share their knowledge with museum guests.
• Plan and coordinate field trips to visit marine biology and SCUBA professionals in action, helping
interns connect with the local science and diving community.
• Assist in purchasing necessary program supplies and managing related budgets.
• Attend regular staff meetings to ensure effective communication and timely program updates.
• Track and report program progress and assist in compiling the program evaluation report.
• Collaborate with Science Center staff to enhance the quality and delivery of the program.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills & Experience
Education & Experience
• Strong knowledge of marine or environmental biology.
• SCUBA certification is required.
• Experience in kayaking and snorkeling preferred.
• Experience supervising youth employees or volunteers is preferred.
• Proficient in basic computer skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport and collaborate effectively with diverse teams.
• Demonstrated customer service excellence and a team-oriented mindset.
• Available to work part-time on weekdays or weekends from May 1st – June 15th.
• Available to work full-time on weekdays from June 16th – August 8th.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
• Bilingual fluency preferred.
