Part-Time Aquatic Life Support Technician
About the role:
The Part-Time Aquatic Life Support Technician will perform maintenance and monitoring of all equipment associated with aquatic animal exhibits. This includes pumps, sand filters, UV sterilizers, heat exchangers, ozone generators, and other equipment that is critical to animal and public health. This position works closely with animal care and facilities staff to complete critical tasks related to the maintenance of Life Support Systems and to ensure the maintenance of designated water quality parameters as well as providing reliable technical assistance to all zoo staff as needed. This position will also ensure that all public water features meet Nebraskas DHHS (Department of Health and Human Services) standards while open to the public. This position reports directly to the Aquatic Life Support Supervisor.

Functions & Responsibilities

Maintain the highest level of quality as it relates to the zoos public and exhibits image.
Perform inspections, preventative maintenance, routine upkeep, cleaning, and repair of all LSS equipment systems including but not limited to water pumps, ozone equipment, meters/monitors/probes/sensors and associated calibrations, air blowers, air prep units, water towers and vessels, water chillers and heat exchangers, valves, LSS pumping, filters, and generators.
Understand water quality reports and their relationship to LSS conditions.
Maintain accurate and detailed records of LSS maintenance and water quality testing.
Prepares and maintains saltwater batches and water transfers on large exhibits.
Assures safety of self, animals, co-workers, and visitors by observing safety guidelines around the animals, equipment, and vehicles.
Utilizes chemical supply products and follows standardized usage guidelines and safety information as set by the Safety Data Sheets.
Constantly strives to further the mission of the organization and avidly supports Omahas Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium.
Implements sustainable practices in daily tasks whenever possible.
Skills & Experience
Knowledge & Skills
High School Diploma or equivalent required. Bachelors Degree in chemistry, biology, engineering, or relevant field preferred. Four years of relevant experience may be substituted for a degree.
Basic knowledge of the maintenance of aquariums, aquatic life support systems, and the use of water quality testing equipment preferred.
Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing preferred.
Ability to provide excellent guest service by positively interacting with guests.
Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with all zoo team members and contacts regarding company business required.
Possess a valid Certified Pool Operator License or ability to obtain.
SCUBA certification preferred but not required.
Candidates might be (depending on position) required to pass a pre-employment background check, drug test, negative skin tuberculosis test, and possess a valid drivers license with a good history.
Job Requirements
Working Conditions
Will sometimes work extended/odd hours including weekends, holidays and some night programs.
Must be able to walk long distances across the zoo.
Must be able to stand, sit, kneel, bend, twist, reach above head and climb.
Will lift, push, pull, and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds using safe and proper lifting methods.
